Neckband stumper

The 2 fronts positioned on top of the back... with wings?

I’m ready to assemble the v-neck vest that coordinates with my new swingy skirt but have reached an impasse… At the time I was knitting it, following along with the directions, I thought “ah, what an interesting way to create the neckband.” I often trust in the logic of such things when tackling a sewing project even if it doesn’t immediately make sense to me, and I can pretty much always figure them out.

NOT THIS TIME!  I’m plum stumped.  Has anyone worked a neckband like this?

Instructions say to sew the shoulders — ok, can do; then sew the neckband center seam… ok, can do; then attach neckband to back at neckline — huh? there’s twice as much length as could possibly fit, and it’s not a pretty edge…  I could see overlapping it (though that would be uncomfortable I think — very thick), or perhaps I should be tucking it under at the back?

Any ideas? Thanks to all my fellow knitters for your ideas and instruction!
